I took eight Year 6s to the district netball festival today and for each of them, it was their first experience of representing our school in an inter-school sporting event. 🏐 Superb teamwork and values shown throughout, what a bunch!

Earlier in the week, Southgate children and staff took to the playground to line up and honour Remembrance Day with a 2 minute silence at 11am. We are very proud of our children who showed understanding and respect. https://t.co/E9LHoDJmH5

Loving the progress my year 6s are making in dance, particularly the boys who in week 1 we’re very unimpressed with our new PE unit. Today, one particular group performed their ‘dance mashup’ and received a standing ovation from the rest of the class. Brilliant stuff!

School Strategy Board (SSB)

Our Schools Strategy Board (SSB) meets once per half term. Our SSB provides the local governance function for our schools which fits within the overall governance structure of GLF Schools. Further information about governance at GLF Schools can be found here.

The three core functions of governance are:

1.  Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction

2.  Holding leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the performance management, including well-being, of staff

3.  Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

It is therefore important that our SSB comprises the right people with the right skills to make appropriate and informed decisions for a school, taking into account the views of children and students, staff, parents and the local community.

To contact the Chair of our Strategy Board, Mr Kevin Gawley, please email gawleyk@glfschools.org

Kevin Gawley - Chair of Schools Strategy Board

Kevin gawley

Kevin Gawley graduated from St. Mary’s College, Strawberry Hill in 1978 and began his teaching career in Surrey.

He developed his leadership experience in Slough, and worked for Berkshire County Council as a Management Consultant before taking his first substantive Headteacher role in Surrey in January 1995. He has extensive headship experience in four schools and most recently was Executive Headteacher at a Primary school in Guildford, where he worked on a part-time basis in a strategic role.

He has been actively involved in school-to-school projects using his experience of headship of schools in Ofsted categories, and is now working as an Education Consultant. He is an NCSL Consultant Leader and Local Leader of Education. He has served as a school governor for more than 25 years in both Primary and Secondary schools

Juliet Ward - Member of the Schools Strategy Board

Julie

Juliet Ward has spent 50 years in primary education, first as a teacher with experience over the Early Years to the end of Year 6 age group, then as a deputy headteacher in Haywards Heath and headteacher in Crawley. Juliet was made an HMI (Her Majesty’s Inspector of schools and colleges) in 1997. During the twelve years serving as an HMI, she supported schools in challenging circumstances and led inspections of primary schools and University primary training courses, for teachers across the country.

Since retirement as an HMI, she has continued to work supporting primary schools and working as a freelance inspector for Ofsted. Now, completely retired, she has joined the Southgate and Academy Trust’s group of governors, with a focus to oversee and monitor all Safeguarding throughout the school. Juliet is has been subject to a full DBS check to ensure her suitability to work with children and young adults.

Samantha Gray - Parent Member of the Schools Strategy Board

Sam gray

Samantha has worked within childcare for 15 years, 13 of which were within an SEN school, and the last 2 years as a childminder.

Samantha has joined the SSB to give a parents perspective.  She wants to support the school and its changes positively, as her eldest son attends Southgate, and her youngest will be joining 2020.

Jemima Jemima lives in the local community and is delighted to be appointed as a Governor for Southgate Primary - she is looking forward to working with both the school (pupils, parents, staff) and local community to ensure that we deliver against the Southgate mission: the school will be a 'place where excellence, pride and ambition is at the heart of all we do.'

Although now working day to day in the finance industry, Jemima has always had a keen interest in education - she graduated from Loughborough University with a PhD in Psychology - the focus of her studies was adolescent motivation in physical education. Most recently she has been a Career Ready mentor (connecting young people with the world of work) and previously she has worked as a Learning Support Assistant.

Jemima enjoys open water swimming, gardening, dog walking and yoga.
