At the end of each half term we have Good News Assembly where we celebrate school values. This half term we focused on who was resilient. We are proud of how these children face problems head on or never give up or are always positive. Well done Team Southgate https://t.co/17XrS06qTp

This afternoon as part of History, Blackman Class experienced a version of the punishments that Victorian prisoners experienced. They completed the 'Shot Drill' 'The Treadwheel' and 'Silence and isolation'. I think they would prefer time out and being grounded. https://t.co/rQUpxLtoh3

English

At Southgate, we follow the National curriculum for the teaching of English across the school. Reading, writing and SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) are taught through the use of high quality texts, exposing all children to a wide range of material, in a variety of ways. We teach English through…

Phonics

We follow a rigorous phonics programme. This is taught from Reception to year 2. The children are assessed and grouped according to their ability. This enables teaching to be focused to meet their needs very specifically. Through pupil tracking all children will receive focused phonics teaching.

Reading

At Southgate, we have a strong commitment to the teaching of reading; from early reading in Reception and KS1 where reading is largely taught through our phonics scheme and then throughout KS2 where our aim is to develop fluent readers with excellent comprehension skills.

Guided reading / comprehension sessions are taught daily in all year groups with a focus on developing fluency, comprehension skills and importantly a love of reading.

Writing

The teaching of writing is based on using quality texts as a stimulus. English lessons take place on a daily basis from Year 2 to Year 6. There is a heavy focus on composition and basic skills through the use of quality texts, but we also teach grammar, spelling, punctuation and handwriting as  discrete lessons (SPaG). These skills we expect to see being applied to their written work. Every fortnight, the children have a BIG writing lesson in their classes. Here they focus on a piece of writing they have been working towards during the week, or a piece that is revisiting a genre they have previously studied. This gives the children the opportunity to write for an extensive amount of time. This supports them in building stamina for writing, but also gives the opportunity to write uninterrupted for a long time.

SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar):

SPaG lessons are taught across the school, which also include a focus on a specific spelling rule/pattern each week. Our children will practise words each week in class and for homework. These words are tested weekly also.
